The Kadima Center has been a very busy place recently. The Kadima
Youth Initiative's Educational Conference at Oakland University on
November 16th, entitled "When Mental Illness First Appears: Advocating
for our Youth at Risk," was an overwhelming success. Over 350 reg-
istrants - students, social workers, psychologists, counselors, attorneys,
educators, and parents - attended ten different breakout sessions and
three keynote addresses, having to do with advocating for youth in the
legal system, adolescent mood disorders, behavioral issues for youth at
risk, suicide prevention, and community and public school resources for
affected youth. Ross Szabo, youth advocate for the National Mental
Health Awareness Campaign, was the lunchtime keynote speaker, and
told a personal story about his own struggle with bi-polar disorder. The
Kadima Youth Initiative is continuing to focus on advocacy for families
with children with mental illness, and is in the process of setting up a
Youth Advisory Task Force.

Kadima just dedicated its 21st resi-
dence for clients - the Ann and Norman
Katz home in West Bloomfield on Sunday
November 18th. I would like to person-
ally extend my appreciation to the Katz
family and to all of the Kadima supporters
who have so graciously and generously
given of their time and money to help
Kadima make our community a better
place for our mothers, fathers, brothers,
sisters, sons and daughters, who are fight-
ing the battle against these brain diseases
and trying to cope with the stigma that
comes with having a mental illness.

Gail Katz, President

My best wishes for a happy and healthy 200811

KADIMA. DEDICATES THE
KATZ HOME

GIVING THANKS YOU'RE NOT
A TURKEY By Michael H. Margolin

On a chilly but sunny Sunday
afternoon, Ann and Norman Katz were
joined by family and friends to celebrate
the dedication of the beautiful home they
purchased for Kadima. After Gail Katz,
Kadima president welcomed everyone,
Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek led everyone in reciting
the blessings before he and Norman af-
fixed the Mezuzah on the doorpost of the
house. He described Ann and Norman
as present day angels, by connecting
their good deeds to the Torah portion
of the week. Ann and Norman each
spoke of their passion and commitment
Ann and Norman Katz
to Kadima and their desire to make
life better for adults who struggle daily with mental illness. This home will
provide a warm and nurturing environment in which four individuals can
live independently.

Betweeen sixty and seventy Kadima Clients came to the Zussman Activity
Center on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for an informal dinner. The event, an
annual tradition, is in its 15th year and enthusiastic greetings and hugs popped
up among residents and others who had not seen one another in a while.

Before and after the dedication, everyone enjoyed tours of the house
and delicious refreshments.

Among the guests were, Janet Aronoff and Rhoda Raderman, who
founded Kadima twenty three years ago when a small group of caring
individuals purchased the first Kadima home. This Ann and Norman Katz
Home is the twenty first Kadima home.

TODAH RABAH

Kudos to our volunteers and supporters who have helped to make
2007 the best year ever.

To all of you, we thank you for helping Kadima. You are the force
that continues to "move us forward." You have helped Kadima
grow throughout 2007. We could not have done it without you.

Kadima will continue to provide services to individuals who need
our help. We look forward to your continued help and support in
2008. Have a very healthy and Happy New Year.

Project Friendship's Popularity Grows

Project Friendship is an important and wonderful program funded and
staffed by NCJW and volunteers for Kadima clients. The volunteers help
with the Sunday brunch as well as joining in for field trips. Social con-
tact is an added plus to this popular activity and clients look forward to
the many and varied activities planned. The next few programs are:

December 16th Special activity
Movie
January 6
Tu Beshvat celebration
January 20
Craft Day
February 2

A wholesome and tasty buffet was laid out and served by Kadima board
members, Phyllis Schwartz and husband, Julie Zussman, Barbara Eisenberg
and husband, and Gail Katz, current board president. Among the victuals
were sweet potatoes, board member Sandi Tamaroff's exotic cranberry sauce,
rolls, mashed potatoes donated by O'Mara's restaurant, and, of course turkey
and stuffing.

After dinner, several desserts were served and pianist, Michael Krieger
played old fays and some Kadima clients got up and sang, among them
Megan, Joel, Steve K. and Chris.

Kadima staffers were there, too, hanging out and helping out including ther-
apists Dan Petersen, Vivian Moore, and Michael Margolin. Margolin said that
he had collected kosher turkeys at Yad Ezra the week before and on his way
out of the office said to Kathy DeMeyere, Kadima receptionist, something he
never thought he would be saying at work:"I'm going out to pick up turkeys."
Other staff were Nancy Stein, Clinical Director, former staffer, Beth Gursky,
who was there with her mother, Rhoda Raderman, a founder of Kadima, help-
ing to set up and last but not least, Paula Schonberg and Miriam Schrieber,
who positioned themselves at the sink in the kitchen and packed food and
washed an endless amount of trays, pots, platters and serving utensils. Paula
is Kadima's event planner and Miriam is a part-time case coordinator. They
are the kind of workers you want on your team.

Next year, bigger, better, more inclusive. Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays
and have a great New Year.

KADIMA LAUNCHES
NEW FAMILY GROUP
