In Loving Memory of

GERALDINE RISSMAN

Obituaries

March 6, 1936 - December 14, 1994

It has been 13 years since you left us.
And it seems like yesterday.
Not a single word was spoken.
Before g-d took you suddenly away.

Every time we pass the tennis club,
go up north or to the zoo,
Every time we see a great blue heron,
Our thoughts flow back to you.

Friend Of The Frail

You saw the world through rose colored glasses,
Enjoying each moment of your days,
We have tried to teach our children
Your philosophies and ways.

T

You were our Florence Nightengale, our Pearl Mesta,
Our Lucille Ball and Mrs. Clean.
All of your friends and family
Know exactly what we mean.

Mom, our hearts are still very broken,
There will never by anyone quite like you,
We know that you are watching and guiding us,
and we just want to say we love and miss you.

MAKE LIFE BETTER

Rita Winer

was inspired by hospice
nurses who cared for her dying father in
Florida 15 years ago. "It was comforting to
know he was safe and being cared for without
aggressive treatments," says Winer, a registered
nurse now part of the Beaumont Hospice staff.
"This was a natural progression for me."

Rita Winer

Rita's work with Jewish patients and their
families through JHCN is especially meaningful.
"I get such satisfaction being able to give back
to my own community," she says, adding, "It's
the little miracles I get to see every day that
make this so rewarding."

Ai

he frail Jewish elderly and their
families had an advocate and
supporter in Dorothy Brown.
Dorothy's father suffered from
Alzheimer's disease and she saw how
difficult it was for her mother, who had
cancer, to provide care and comfort for
the man she loved.
"It's a nightmare for the caregivers,"
Dorothy told the Jewish News in 1999."I
wanted to help."
That year, she and her husband
created the Dorothy and Peter Brown
Jewish Community Adult Day Care
Program, administered by JVS at its
headquarters in Southfield and by
Jewish Home and Aging Services at a
freestanding building next to JHAS'
Fleischman Residence
in West Bloomfield.
Peter Ostrow directs
the program at both
sites.
"Dorothy was a
champion for uphold-
ing the dignity and
respect of people with
memory loss',' said JVS
President and CEO
Dorothy Brown
Barbara Nurenberg.
Dorothy's husband of 65 years,
Peter, was the founder and president
of Taylor-based Sealy Mattress Co. of
Michigan and died a year after the
day care program was founded. But
Dorothy continued their quest to aid
Detroit Jewish elderly and their fami-
lies.
In 2000, she established the Dorothy
and Peter Brown Memory Care Pavilion
on the third floor of the Fleischman
Residence to provide residential care
for those with Alzheimer's and demen-
tia disorders.
Dorothy Brown, of Bloomfield Hills,
died Dec. 7, 2007.
"The day care centers were her
idea',' said daughter Susan Lewis of
Bloomfield Hills. "They were one of
the first in the country. The centers are
recognized nationally as a wonderful
program.
"Wherever my mother would go,
people would stop her and thank her
because it was such a relief that their
relatives had some dignity and a place
to go," said Susan. "And caregivers had
a little time off so they'd be ready to

tackle the hardships when their loved
ones came home."
Dorothy sat on the advisory com-
mittee of the day care program,
noted JHAS Executive Director Carol
Rosenberg. "She wanted to know what
they were doing, and she got a lot of
nachos [joy] from the participants'
music and art therapy. She wanted the
community to see that even though the
elderly were struggling with their frail-
ty, they were still people with abilities."
Dorothy was also active with the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, West Bloomfield-based
Hadassah, Congregation Shaarey Zedek
in Oakland County and Knollwood
Country Club in West Bloomfield. The
Browns also supported the Boca Raton-
Delray Beach Jewish community near
their winter home in Florida.
"My mother was special,"
said Susan. "She had a twinkle
in her eye, and she was an `up'
kind of person. She was a very
kind, caring, loving, compas-
sionate human being."
Dorothy Brown was the
beloved wife of the late Peter
D. Brown. Precious mother
of Susan and Bart Lewis.
Dearest grandmother of
Lainie Lipschutz, Julie and
Richard Winkelman. Adoring two nan-
nie of Allie and Michael Lipschutz,
Lauren and Amy Roses and Katelyn
Winkelman. Dear daughter of the late
Esther and Joseph Stralser. Dearest
sister of the late Ruth (the late Sol
Stein), the late Harold (Deena) Stralser
and the late Bernard Stralser, the late
Violet Stralser. Also survived by Janis
(William) Wetsman, Adam (Carol)
Wetsman, David (Lori) Wetsman,
Nicole and Ryan Wetsman, Claire and
Sarah Wetsman. Survived and loved by
many nieces and nephews and devoted
friends and caregivers, Ann Reynolds,
Carole Merritt, Nicole Reynolds, and
Cynthia Stallworth.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be direct-
ed to the Dorothy and Peter Brown
Jewish Community Adult Day Care
Program, 6720 W. Maple Road, West
Bloomfield, MI 48322 or the American
Diabetes Association National
Office, Research Foundation, 1701 N.
Beauregard St., Alexandra, VA 22311.
Arrangements by the Ira Kaufman
Chapel.
