Schlemiel

Definition: Slang for a useless, ineffective individual. Schleimel can be used to describe

your good-for-nothing little brother or worthless neighbor. The Hebrew word it is derived

from means "my well-being is God" . . . how does that make sense?

Example: 'Johnny, clean up your room now, you little schemiel! I can't even see what

color the carpet is!"

Atara Lakritz, 15, is a sophomore at the Frankel Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield.

North Farmington High School. "We must set high standards for genera-

tions to follow in order to make a difference. I wear shirts with empowering

eco-friendly messages all the time; it makes me feel like I am doing some-

thing to promote awareness in society today"

Recently, Levi Strauss created a new collection called Levi's Eco. This

line is not so much about donating proceeds to a cause, but more about

helping our environment. The line includes great-fitting jeans, comfy T-

shirts and other items, all made from 100 percent organic fabrics and natu-

ral dyes — even the price tag is made from recycled materials.

With all these options, now there's no excuse not

to show your concern and make a difference.

Shaye Winer, 16, is a junior at West Bloomfield High

School. Lauren Lewis, 15, is a sophomore at Bloom-

field Hills Andover.
