For The Couch Potato
The Kennedy Center Honors cel-
ebrates the cultural contributions
and career achievements of five
artists — singer Diana Ross, singer-
songwriter Brian Wilson, filmmaker
Martin Scorcese, comedian-actor-nov-
elist Steve Martin and pianist Leon
Fleischer — 9-11 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 26, on CBS.
The Jewish member of the 30th
class of Kennedy Center honorees,
Leon Fleischer, 79, lost the use of most
of his right hand for almost 40 years
because of a rare neurological disor-
der; he specialized in the left-handed
repertoire while also conducting and
teaching.
He fought for years to return to two-

Rock Notes

You've probably heard that Kevin
Dubrow, 52, the lead singer of the
1980s heavy metal band Quiet
Riot, died of still unknown causes
on Nov.18. It's a sad story. Dubrow
blew all his money and even had

handed playing and did so in 2004,
through a combination of massage
and Botox injections. A short docu-
mentary film on Fleischer, titled Two
Hands, was nominated last year for an
Academy Award.
• In God's Name, a CBS special air-
ing 9-11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, will
explore the complex questions of our
time — including the rise of terror-
ism, fanaticism, intolerance and war
— through the intimate thoughts
and beliefs of 12 of the world's most
influential spiritual leaders, including
Askenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona
Metzger.

For The Reader
Set in Chicago, the V.I. Warshawski
detective novels made Jewish author
Sarah Paretsky famous. She sets
her new novel, Bleeding Kansas (G.P.
Putnam's Sons; $25.95), in the center
of the country as it becomes a battle-
ground for a diverse group of people,
including two women who want to
practice their religion in private and
a family who want to make religion a
very public battle.
Paretsky reads from and signs cop-
ies of her book 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan.
5, at Nicola's Books, 2513 Jackson (in
the Westgate Shopping Center), in Ann
Arbor. (734) 662-0600 or

A delightful musical based on the unlikely attraction between lyricist Carole Bayer Sager
