nswer: Dear Pamela, first
let me clarify some facts
that I mentioned last time.
Children are overweight if their
Body Mass Index (BMI) is in the
85th to 95th percentile of children
their age. They are considered
obese if their BMI falls in the 96th
percentile or above. According to
a December 6, 2007, article in the
New England Journal of Medi-
cine, about one-third of American
adolescents is either overweight or
obese. Reportedly, 34% of Ameri-
cans over 20 are obese. Research
has shown that childhood BMI can
be a predictor of adult obesity.
A long-term Danish study
and University of Califor-
nia computer simulation,
both released last week,
predict a veritable tsunami
of obesity-related, early
heart disease deaths. An
accompanying editorial
by a prominent Harvard
researcher concluded
that by 2035 this epi-
demic will actually cut
Americans' lifespan 2 to 5
years. That effect would
be equal to the effect of all cancers
combined.
Next article: A detailed list of
action steps a parent or guardian
can take to prevent and/or mitigate
childhood obesity.
