Fostering a half-century of creativity and artistic expression is cause for celebration,
so the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center pulled out all the stops to toast its 50th
anniversary — from fine wine to hors d'oeuvres and even a juried multimedia show
called "The Fine Art of Cakes."
More than 1,000 people attended a weekend of 50 festive events
Oct. 12-14, which included a gala party, tours of the center, exhibi-
tion openings, artist demonstrations and hands-on workshops. A
special preview bash also was held Oct. 11 for community leaders
and members of the news media.
"The BBAC has evolved and successfully grown over the past
half-century because it's all about people and encouraging
their artistic spirits," said BBAC executive director Jane Linn.

Founded in 1957, the nonprofit art center on Cranbrook
Road in Birmingham offers 500 visual-arts classes on subjects including draw-
ing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, jewelry and metalsmithing, ceramics and
fiber to 4,000 students ranging in age from 3 to over 80. "We fill a niche in the
region," said Linn. "We provide a comfortable place where people can express
their own artistic talents, purchase art and enjoy all kinds of wonderful visual
art free of charge."
The BBAC's holiday shop will showcase the work of students and faculty
members through Dec. 16.
