It Takes Two from page A30
school education and a trip to
Israel — of a strong commitment
to and participation in the Jewish
community, Levy says.
When she came here from Texas
almost two years ago, where she
was director of a day camp at the
Austin Jewish Community Center,
Levy became director of Center
Day Camps. She was familiar with
Tamarack and wondered why
the two camps weren't working
together. So she put in a call to her
counterpart at Tamarack, Debbie
Landau, soon after arriving in
Detroit.
While Forest was doing Jewish
camp Texas-style, Landau was
working at a local day camp when
she was offered the opportunity to
serve as Tamarack's assistant direc-
tor. Then she moved up. Like Levy,
she is now working her third sum-
mer as a camp director.
Landau loves Jewish camp. She
loves it because it's fun, like the
Tamarack program "JP (Jewish
Programming) in Your PJs," an
optional activity that begins with
a bit of Jewish study, followed by a
little jogging. It starts at 7:30 in the
morning, and on a typical day at
least 40 children show up.
She also loves Jewish camp
because "experiencing Judaism in
a camp setting is unparalleled," she
says. "Kids get an informal educa-
tion that is so unique and come out
with a stronger Jewish identity.
"My two sons have attended
Tamarack for 13 summers and I see
the impact that Jewish camping has
had on them:' Landau says. "Ryan
is attending MSU [Michigan State
University] and is the religious stu-
dent director at MSU Hillel. Andrew
is a graduate of U-M [University of
Michigan] and was past president
of Aim Arbor's Jewish Resource
Center!'
So what does Landau see for the
future? Everything good.
With its already diverse collec-
tion of children, from the unaffiliat-
ed to boys and girls from observant
homes, Tamarack is excited to have
yet another group of Jewish boys
and girls, from Center Day Camps.
"Forest and I are passionate
about Jewish camps:' she says. "It's
such an exciting and fun place for
children."
