do about it? Lynn.

nswer: Dear Lynn, a child
who is overweight by his
or her 2nd or 3rd birthday
is more likely to be overweight or
obese later as an adolescent and as
an adult. Children are considered
overweight if their Body Mass
Index (BMI) is greater than 95%
of children at that age. BMI is a
calculation that takes into account
both height and weight.

10% of children 2 to 3 years old
are overweight and 15% of chil-
dren 6-11 years old are overweight.
What might shock you
even more is that National
Institutes of Health (NIH)
researchers reported in
2005 that a child is more
likely to be overweight at
2 to 3 years of age, if the
mother was overweight
,
or obese before she
became pregnant.

So, what can be done?
Prevention, prevention,
prevention—starting be-
fore pregnancy and extend-
ing through early childhood and
adolescence. Some tips for feeding
young children: child-size portions
(includes 3 meals and small snacks
at 2-3 hour intervals when the child
is active), and food selections that
are lower in fat, sugar, and calo-
ries, and are not highly processed/
refined. I hope this helps answer
your question.
