OTPOURRI...
It doesn't make claim to being a
Jewish delicatessen, and although
the thought could possibly be assumed,
recently opened Bronx Deli on Telegraph,
Pontiac, is a good little sandwich, salad
and soup shop with a smattering of des-
serts.
Traditional foods as one would imagine
at a Jewish delicatessen are not claimed to
be present ... But it does have a chicken
broth with matzah balls or the true old-
fashioned long noodles ... Not the chicken
soup one expects at a Jewish deli with
the essential flavoring vegetables, carrots
and onion, etc., but chicken broth just the
same ... Also Sy Ginsberg Corned Beef.
Neither owner, Marc Zuccato or Leonard
Mazzola, possesses any restaurant experi-
ence, never having worked in or owned
a delicatessen ... But Bronx Deli with
its wall photos of New York landmarks,
among many, light fixtures inside of
upside down aluminum pails, etc., serves
a purpose for shoppers, walkers-by and
employees at the nearby Oakland County
courthouse, offices, etc.
Seating is for 24 at tables and almost 20
at stools by the window and prep counter,
plus a good kids menu ... Open Monday-
Friday, 10:30-7; Saturday, 11-4.
HIS EYE TWINKLING smile was one
of supreme gratification ... Sam Ansara
shook his head slowly and grinned happily
with an inner feeling of thanks.
He was witnessing the second-year
anniversary celebration of an amateur
cook and jeweler who had also become
a successful restaurateur ... The many

WHEN HE WAS 8 years old, Iry
Dworkin's parents gave him his first
trumpet, not realizing that it would be the
beginning of a musical career for him ...
The bar mitzvah receptions at Lacher's
Restaurant on Dexter, with the Rose Cohen
Band, playing with sax men Felix Resnick,
Iry Witcoff and Marty Mitchell, trumpet
genius Iry Lewis, fun drummer Dave
Fenton, Hy Goldman at the piano, blowing
his horn with Phil Brestoff's Orchestra at
the Michigan Theatre, etc.
He enlisted in the Navy and saw the
Pacific on an LST boat, but continued
playing trumpet after the war until retir-
ing from music in 1952, going into law
practice and building homes.
Today, 85-year-old Iry is back with the
lip, cutting a CD album Trumpet Man
in the basement of his grandson-in-law
Doug Bowen's home ... Irv's last record
cutting was back in 1942 with Marty
Mitchell at United Sound ... No wonder
neighbors came outside at the home
of Iry and Olga on Stonewood Court in
Farmington Hills, when he tooted Bunny
Berigan's great "I Can't Get Started With
You" ... The album has Iry doing a heck of
a good job on it.

birthday ... To Dr. Avery Murav on his
birthday. LI
