Letters 2 Hillel's Community Role As the president of the Board of Trustees of Hillel Day School, I want to commend Editor Robert Sklar ("Hillel's Golden Year:' Nov. 22, page 5) for his accurate portrayal of Hillel as we approach our 50th anniversary. The Hillel Day School community is proud of its thousands of alumni and of the academic excellence it provides in both secular and Jewish education. I would like to reinforce that both the professional leadership and the Board of Trustees recognize the criti- cal role Hillel plays — and will con- tinue to play — for the Conservative Jewish community as well as for Jews affiliated within the Reform and Orthodox movements. While part of our golden anniver- sary is to celebrate our past, more importantly, we are strategically plan- ning for the next decades. The school leadership wants the community to know that we are prepared to face the challenges and seize the opportunities about which Robert Sklar wrote in his piece last week. From a position of strength, Hillel will continue to pro- vide the best education possible, and we will ensure that our professionals continue to have the latest educational tools and training in order to do so. Over the years, Hillel has been for- tunate to receive strong support from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and from many individual members of the Detroit Jewish com- munity. This support has allowed us to provide the financial assistance neces- sary in order to enable the broadest possible cross section of our commu- nity to send their children to Hillel. Call today for your by _ Farmington Hills Hillel's Middle Ground Editor Robert Sklar correctly noted Hillel Day School's growing appeal among members of Reform congrega- tions ("Hillel's Golden Year:' Nov. 22, page 5). Yet he mistakenly implied that this growing appeal may in the future require Hillel to re-orient itself in the direction of Reform Judaism. In fact, it is Reform Judaism that, to its credit, has already re-oriented itself toward Hillel by re-embracing many of the "tachlis" elements of Judaism that the proponents of Classical Reform discarded as "Kitchen Judaism" nearly a century and a half ago. Hillel has always championed a comfortable middle ground, radiating a powerful appeal in multiple direc- tions. That appeal now extends into the world of Reform Judaism. Howard N.
