USDA dietary guidelines
make the following key
alcohol-related recommendations:
(1) Those who drink alcoholic
beverages should do so in
moderation—defined as
up to one drink per day
for women and up to two
drinks per day for men (a
standard drink is generally
considered to be 12 oz.
of beer, 5 oz. of wine, or
\ 1.5 oz. of 80-proof dis-
tilled spirits—roughly
\\ 1 equivalent to 0.5 oz. or
12 grams of alcohol);
(2) Alcoholic beverages
should not be consumed by
those who cannot restrict
their alcohol intake, women
of childbearing age who may
become pregnant, pregnant and
lactating women, children and
adolescents, individuals taking
medications that can interact
with alcohol, and those with
specific medical conditions;
(3) Alcoholic beverages should be
avoided by individuals engag-
ing in activities that require at-
tention, skill, or coordination,
such as driving or operating
machinery.
