New to the world of Webkinz — plush pets
whose secret code matches them to a virtual
pet online — are new items created to keep
the toy animals dressed in style.
The poodles, koalas, leopards and more
already have inspired the likes of lip gloss,
bracelets and mouse pads for their owners.
At Guys-N-Gals in West Bloomfield, which
carries mostly clothing items, a small section
of toys includes Webkinz pets, accessories
and now the new line of Webkinz apparel.

girls come in and see them on the rack and
scream," said store employee Janet Leonard.
Adds owner Lois Levenson, "This has been a big phenomenon that is not ending.
And now the clothes are the hot new item around."

Musical History

Heidi Smith Hyde's Mendel's Accordion (Kar-Ben
Publishing, 2007) manages to slip an informative
history lesson between the lines of a lively tale of
klezmer musicians and the rebirth and adaptation
of klezmer music. Mendel's life is followed from
his days as an accordion-playing young man in
the "old country" to being an immigrant in New
York and later as a great-grandfather whose stories
inspire a younger generation of klezmer musicians.
Tongue-twisting character names like Mendel from
Melnitze, Mottel from Moscow and Pinchus from
Pinsk and colorful illustrations by Johanna Van Der
Sterre keep the page turning fun. The book's final
note contains a more detailed description of both
klezmer music and the accordion and its history.
