hear are the birds — herons, egrets
and cormorants," Roffey says.
The house is "organic" in that it's
designed to blend with the land more
than sit atop it, he says. "It's comprised
of two structures connected by a
bridge so that the house frames a view
of the pond and wetland on its oppo-
site shore rather than blocks the view."
"It's very sculptural:' says their
architect, Don Paul Young.
The main living space is connected
to the master bedroom by a bridge
and a second bridge connects addi-
tional bedrooms to the guest arrival
area.
For Young, whose architectural
career spans more than 50 years, this
is his first totally green home design,
although his firm has been involved in
a number of geo-thermal houses.
The eventual landscaping will use

all plants native to Michigan — par-
ticularly sedges — and no sod, Danto
says. They are planning to put in 80
to 100 trees, mostly evergreens. The
plants and trees will need added water
and nurturing for a few years, she says.
"There is no Pollyanna way to do it."
But once established, Roffey says,
sedges have a much deeper root
structure than sod grass and thus
require less water. "They also hold the
soil much better in rains that would
otherwise cause erosion if traditional
grasses are used."
"It's so incredible to have this con-
tinuity between indoor and outdoor
spaces," Young says.
He wouldn't give Roffey and Danto's
house a traditional architectural label.
Instead, he says: "I'd call it a 21st cen-
tury house." II

me a tree hugger with an affinity

it doesn't have to be that raw look.

are actually building green"
