According to Plymouth diaries, among the guests at that first Thanksgiving was Grand Sachem (intertribal chief) Massasoit and members of the Native American ( ‘.''' Wampanoag people, who had helped the colonists hunt and grow food. In 1863, President Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November a federal holiday as a "prayerful day of Thanksgiving." In 1941, the Congress approved the fourth Thursday in November as our of- ficial Thanksgiving Day holiday.
