Thanksgiving Day was
celebrated in 1621 by the
settlers of Plymouth Colony (a.k.a.
the Pilgrims) as a way of giving
thanks for their first harvest, the
food on their table, and to God.
According to Plymouth diaries,
among the guests at that first
Thanksgiving was Grand
Sachem (intertribal chief)
Massasoit and members
of the Native American
( ‘.'''
Wampanoag people, who
had helped the colonists
hunt and grow food.

Beginning in 1789
with President George
Washington, a series of
Presidents have pro-
claimed a day of national
"Thanksgiving." In 1863,
President Lincoln declared
the last Thursday in November
a federal holiday as a "prayerful
day of Thanksgiving." In 1941,
the Congress approved the fourth
Thursday in November as our of-
ficial Thanksgiving Day holiday.
With our forebears in mind, I think
Thanksgiving is an excellent time
to:
• Focus on the important relation-
ships in our lives;
• Rededicate ourselves to a healthy
environment and lifestyle; and
• Give thanks for all that we enjoy.
