IPO Gala Raising the curtain on the 35th season of Great Performances on PBS, The Israel Philharmonic 70th Anniversary Gala Concert, recorded last December in Tel Aviv, premieres Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 9 p.m. on PBS stations nation- wide. Works by Brahms, Bruch and Ravel take center stage as Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman and Zubin Mehta SUMMER lead a special birthday gathering hon- oring the IPO. Mehta, the group's music director for life, leads the orchestra as it accom- panies Zukerman in a performance of Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1. Ravel's "choreographic poem" La Valse offers the orchestra a chance to sparkle on its own, while Barenboim takes the keyboard for Brahms' first great orchestral work, the D Minor Piano Concerto No. 1. One of two conductors particularly associated with the IPO (the other is Leonard Bernstein), Bombay-born Mehta is a longtime champion and supporter of the IPO. "It's my fam- ily," he says, terming the orchestra "the flagship of the nation, culturally speaking." Founded in 1936 by Polish violinist and Zionist Bronislaw Huberman, the orchestra — known at that time as the Palestine Orchestra — was established to save Jewish musicians in Europe from the imminent Holocaust; con- ductor William Steinberg helped orga- nize and prepare the ensemble. Arturo Toscanini led the premiere concert. For broadcast times, check your local listings. Jewish character: the father of Brad Garrett on the FOX series Til Death. A special Thanksgiving episode has been shelved until the strike is over. Valerie Harper, the non-Jewish actress who often plays Jews (Mary Tyler Moore's friend Rhoda on TV and Golda Meir on stage), plays Garrett's mother. Meanwhile, Adler recently was seen back- stage at a Bruce Springsteen concert at Madison Square Garden – which is pretty cool for a septuagenarian. He was there as the special guest of Steven Van Zandt, who plays lead guitar for Springsteen as well as, of course, co-starring on The Sopranos as gangster Silvio Dante. Adler is pretty hip for 77, but ,w Larry King seems even older than his age (73). King is notorious for not prep- ping for guests, and sometimes it seems that, except for sports, he hasn't really absorbed a new fact in the last decade. He recently drove Jerry Seinfeld crazy dur- ing an interview when he seemed unsure whether Seinfeld, the No. 1 show on TV when Jerry decided to end it, had been canceled. Jerry said to Larry, "Are you under the impression that I got canceled? Is this still CNN? Do you know who I am? Can we get a resume in here for me that Larry can go over?" Seinfeld might have been a little harsh. Still, I have to believe that a lot of King's famous guests have thought the same thing over the years (does this guy know who I am?) but didn't have the chutzpah and wit to call King on the carpet as Seinfeld did. -Nr9v/ York body News Fri & Sat V') 7:00 Sun 4:00 & 7:00 ETRO sr TIM filEATRE EXPERIENCE BY POPULAR DEMAND - SECOND WEEK ADDED!
