eshivat Akiva com-
memorated Worldwide
Solidarity Day on Oct. 30
for kidnapped Israeli soldiers. The
day's theme was: "We cannot allow
our apathy to kill our soldiers!'
Students participated in a cer-
emony led by Akiva's educational
director, Rabbi Yigal Tsaidi. The
program was organized by Rabbi
Bezalel and Ayelet Safra, who head
the local Kolel Torah MiTzion.
It was timed to coordinate with
Israel's official commemoration
of the day in Jerusalem under
auspices of the World Zionist
Organization and included families
of the soldiers.
The Akiva event included eighth-
grade students relating the history
of the captured soldiers while a
large clock was heard ticking in
the background, marking the 25
years that have passed since the
taking of Israeli soldiers Zechariah
Baumel, Zvi Katz and Yehuda
Feldman. They were kidnapped by
Syrian soldiers and have not been
returned. Since then, these IDF
soldiers have been joined by five
others in captivity.
Rabbi Safra offered a prayer
asking for their peaceful and safe
return. Fifth-graders, under the
direction of Anat Nachshoni, sang
"Shir HaMaalot: A Song of Ascents"
from the Book of Psalms.
"We at Akiva stand firmly
behind our soldiers; we will not
allow ourselves to forget:' Rabbi
Tsaidi said. "Each morning, special
prayers are dedicated to the shvuy-
im, those who have been taken
captive and are being held against
their will."
He said the families of the sol-
diers continue "to suffer unspeak-
able pain and dread for the fate of
their loved ones!'
"We suffer along with them',' he
said. "After all, what are the Jewish
people if not one great family? Our
nation will not be whole until our
soldiers are returned and this suf-
fering is alleviated."
