Teen Essay Winners
Adina Applebaum, a sophomore at the
Frankel Jewish Academy and a staff
writer for the JN's Teen2Teen section,
won first place in
the Jewish Book
Fair's student essay
contest sponsored
by the Jewish
Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Students wrote
Adina
about constitutional
Applebaum
amendments; Adina
wrote about the First
Amendment, which guarantees freedom
of the press.
Adding to the thrill of winning was the
unusual touch of having all three win-
ning students on stage with Book Fair's
patron-night speaker, attorney, professor
and author Alan Dershowitz.
Dershowitz took time beforehand to
read all three essays and to commend the
teens for their efforts. He then quizzed
them briefly about what they wrote and
put forth questions of his own. The audi-
ence enjoyed the repartee, and it set the
tone for Dershowitz's armchair discus-
sion with local attorney and longtime
friend Mayer Morganroth.
Joshua Kahn, a freshman at West
Bloomfield-based FJA, took second place,
with Daniel Keen, a senior at Farmington
Harrison High School, earning third
place. Cash prizes were awarded.
