Brothers Howard and Steven Tapper, who have stores in West Bloomfield and Novi, have held the drive, which collects gently used coats and new hats and gloves, for 16 years. This year's collection goal is 1,000 coats. Cash contributions will go toward the purchase of reasonably priced new coats. Coats will be donated to Kids Kicking Cancer in Detroit, Orchard Children's Services in Southfield and Grace Center of Hope and Baldwin Church Center, both in Pontiac. "When the entire community joins forces," Steven Tapper said, "the out- come is so much more powerful than the efforts of each individual organi- zation. "When we invite others to partici- pate with us in charitable endeavors, we feel like we have been able to give on two fronts — first to the people who are in need and, second, by join- ing together with good people from all backgrounds, all walks of life, to make a difference for the common good. "That," Tapper said,"is the best feel- ing of all." Coats may be dropped off locally at: Tapper's, West Bloomfield JCC, Hillel Day School, Frankel Jewish Academy, Yeshivat Akiva, Detroit Jewish News, Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield and West Bloomfield B'nai Israel Center, Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and Temple Israel.
