Nancy Goldberg

answered an ad in the
paper asking for volunteers to visit the sick and
elderly when she turned 16. "My parents said,
`Isn't that depressing. Don't you want to do some-
thing fun with your time?' I told them it's only
depressing when no one shows up to visit."

Now a retired educator and veteran Jewish
Hospice & Chaplaincy Network volunteer,
Nancy dedicates her time to visiting hospice
clients, many of whom can't communicate or
respond. "I try to add some life to the room with
music or conversation," Nancy says. "When you
see a smile on their face because they anticipate a
visitor, it is gratifying and makes me feel like I'm
making a difference."

rom 1950 until his retire-
ment in 1984, Isadore
Jack Goldstein was
executive secretary of the United
Hebrew Schools, where he devel-
oped a business-style of manage-
ment and raised funds. He intro-
duced the Hebrew school buses
that many students rode from
their public schools.
For many years,
he was also the
local representa-
tive of Nippersink
Manor Resort in
Wisconsin and met
many memorable
people this way.
Mr. Goldstein, 88,
Isadore
of West Bloomfield,
Goldstein
died Nov. 1, 2007.
He was a strong
man with great energy and deter-
mination who enjoyed tackling
problems of all kinds whether in
the office or on a muddy trail.
He also had a lot of fun fixing
mechanical problems.
In the early 1970s Isadore ful-
filled his lifelong dream to own
land in the country. He had the
time of his life there, building a
house, barn, dock and raft, creat-
ing trails in the woods, battling
the beavers and enjoying nature.
He has donated this property to
the Oakland Audubon Society as
the "Goldstein Sanctuary."
Isadore was a longtime member
of the Sholem Aleichem Institute
and of a Saturday morning oneg
that has been going for more
than 40 years and where intel-
lectual discussion was a delight
to him.
Isadore's great passion was
classical music, which often
moved him to tears — and if you

PHILLIP PAUL BEDNARSH, 62, of
Southfield, died Nov. 8, 2007.
He is survived by is mother, Jennie
Bednarsh of Southfield; son and
daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Allen and
Marie Laird of Auburn Hills; sisters,
Judy Bogorad of Southfield, Linda
Bednarsh of Milford; grandson, Aaron
Paul; dearest friends, Judy and Arlene;
loving nieces and nephews.

knew Mahler, you passed his mus-
ter. He loved the Stratford Festival
in Canada and was an enthusias-
tic regular at the Detroit Opera
and Detroit Chamber Winds and
Strings. He was a terrific dancer
and he danced until his legs could
no longer support him.
Isadore was born Feb. 28,1919,
in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Molly (Challof)
and Sol Goldstein. He married
Ethel Battalen there on April 24,
1942, and they moved to Detroit
in 1950; they remained married 49
years before their divorce.
Isadore graduated magna cum
laude from Brooklyn College
with a B.A. in economics in 1942.
During World War II, he was a
radio repairman in the 65th Signal
Battalion, European Theatre of
Operations and was honorably dis-
charged in 1946.
Isadore Goldstein is survived
by his son, Mark (Norma Bristol)
Goldstein of San Francisco; daugh-
ters, Louise (Bruce Thomadsen)
Goldstein of Madison, Wis., and
Frances Goldstein of Southfield;
grandchildren, Elizabeth (Allen
Madsen) Maier, Sara (David Cohen)
Maier, Auren Kaplan and Daniel
Thorn; great-granddaughter, Leora
Cohen.
He was predeceased by his
parents and his sister, Jeanette
Eisner.
At his request, his body was
donated to Wayne State University
Medical School.
A memorial service will be held
3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at the
Dorfman Chapel, 30440 12 Mile,
Farmington Hills.
Memorials to the Sholem
Aleichem Institute or the Detroit
Chamber Winds and Strings are
appreciated. E

Mr. Bednarsh was the loving son of
the late Charles Bednarsh.
Contributions may be made to
the American Heart Association,
Memorial & Tribute Program, Dept.
77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678-3968 or to
a charity of one's choice. Interment at
Workmen's Circle Cemetery-Zamosc
Tamoshover Section. Arrangements by
Hebrew Memorial Chapel.
