N 1997 A YOUNG AUTHOR by the name of

Joshua Henkin caught the attention of
the literary world with his debut novel
SWIMMING ACROSS THE HUDSON, which was named a Los Angeles
Times notable book of the year. Since then Henkin's short stories
have been published in Glimmer Train, Ploughshares, The Southern
Review, The Yale Review, and elsewhere. Henkin's new novel,
MATRIMONY, has just been released. It portrays the choices and
sacrifices we make at different stages in our lives, how our
ambitions and desires change, and how we come to lead the lives we
live. The book has been named a "National Book Sense" October
selection and has been noted among Borders "Original Voices."

Henkin's fiction has been performed at Symphony Space and
broadcast on NPR. His works have been anthologized in numerous
collections. He has been cited in Best American Short Stories and is
the recipient of the James Fellowship for the Novel, the University of
Michigan Hopwood Award, the PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, and a
grant from the Michigan Council of the Arts. His essays and reviews
have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Los Angeles
Times Book Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Boston Globe, The
Nation and The Christian Science Monitor.

The author teaches creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College and
Brooklyn College.

Following Shabbat dinner, Henkin will discuss The Life & Times of a
Jewish Novelist.
