THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

A Bad Deal

Restaurants need true partners to thrive.

p

OTPOURRI
One of the biggest scourges of
the restaurant business over the
years has been partnership problems ...
In most cases, this inevitably led to a res-
taurant's closing ... Various tribulations
usually contributed to the ill-fated lack of
success, but in most cases, it boiled down
to the partners having a lack of knowledge
about each other ... Taking on partners
without really knowing one another can
sometimes be problematic, but in many
instances not difficult to rectify.
A SIGN ASKS customers to place their
order at the cashier before sitting down
at Pei Wei Asian Diner on 14 Mile and
Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills ...
A large menu-filled blackboard hangs on
the wall, from which the choices are made
... However, there are also printed menu
sheets that folks are taking to the table
they want to save and after making their
selections, get up to order and receive a
number to hang on their table ... There
is no hot coffee at Pei Wei or its next door
neighbor, Potbelly Sandwich Works ... Pei
Wei does have hot tea.
I SORT OF figured and was right,
that owner Steve Goldberg wouldn't fool
around with tradition and not have the
proper kind of noodles for his chicken
soup at Stage Deli, West Bloomfield ... If
there was one more thing that his mom
and dad, Harriet and Jack Goldberg,
always insisted on was that their Jewish
food be with true Jewish tradition ... Real
straight noodles, not those curly pasta
whatevers that so many places put in their
chicken soup.
