▪ Come In & Experience Great Service In A Relaxing Environments Jessica Tama Welcomes You! Songs With A Message A family concert at Temple Israel. Walk-ins always welcome! Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News r I t seems almost inevitable that Sheldon Low would have a Jewish music career — even though he earned a degree in mechanical engi- neering and was successful in finding technical work. Low had lots of talented role models close to home. Low's grandmother, the late Florence Low, was a song leader who performed in Houston with Jewish music legend Debbie Friedman. His dad, Steven Low, was a song leader in St. Louis, where the younger Low grew up. Most dramatically, there was the influence of Jewish singer-songwriter Rick Recht, who has appeared before Michigan audiences. Recht led pro- grams in St. Louis and invited the teenage Sheldon to perform on a recording and serve as his intern. The result of all that training can be seen at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, where Low is presenting a family concert, singing and playing guitar. Temple Israel's Shabbat Singers also will perform. "My show will be geared toward all ages;' says Low, 24, who will be joined by drummer Ronen Itzik and bass- ist Nathan Peck. "I'm probably going to perform one song from my latest album, It's All Challah to Me, which came out a few weeks ago. "I'll also have straight-up Jewish rock songs, which will be for teens and probably the primary source of the material. These will be from my first album, On One Foot. "Then, I'm going to mix in some other tunes, which are liturgically based — from my contemporaries and from my group of favorites" The songs from Low's albums reflect his outlook. He's co-writer or full writer on almost all of them, working with Recht or his girlfriend, Hadar Orshalimy, an Israeli with fam- ily in Michigan. It's All Challah to Me captures a fun day in Low's young life and conveys a Jewish context. On One Foot highlights Low's ability to craft pop songs and timeless liturgical melodies for service settings. FREE ink 141 r MR MIS .. .. "Rick Recht gave me gigs during my high school years so I was basically song leading instead of working at McDonald's or doing equivalent jobs:' Low says. "I also did those kinds of programs at a camp where my dad was the director. "I paid my way through college by song leading at a temple close to Tufts University in Boston, where I earned my degree. Although I got an engineering job in Massachusetts, Rick asked me to be the first artist on a record label he was starting. I was not being fulfilled by engineering so I gave it up." Low, now based in New York and doing 60 shows a year, thinks of himself as an educator more than a performer. He has worked as an artist in residence and appeared at the 2006 international convention of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization. "I'm trying to get messages across:' says Low, who grew up in a Conservative synagogue and works part time in a Reform temple. "I talk about what a song means and how we can make it relevant. I talk about Darfur, global warming and spiritual- ity." II Sheldon Low performs 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov.11, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. The program is free, but reservations must be called in to Ada at (248) 661- 5700.
