Dear

Parkinson's

drink diet soda
regularly. Is
aspartame a concern? Fred.

A

nswer: Dear Fred, For
years, aspartame (mar-
keted as Equal and Nu-
traSweet) has been the subject of
controversy regarding its approval
by the European Food Safety Au-
thority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA).

Critics of aspartame now typically
point to two recent (2005 and
2007) scientific studies
(using rats) conducted in
Italy that indicated that
life-long consumption of
aspartame may be causally
related to multiple forms
of cancer in humans.
Claims of conflict of
interest in both EFSA's
and the FDA's aspartame
approval process has
also stoked the critics' ire.

In 2006, A study of humans
sponsored by the National Cancer
Institute found no significant link
between aspartame and various
cancers, but was criticized for
studying a relatively short time-
period of consumption. There is
anecdotal evidence that aspartame
may inhibit the uptake of L-dopa (a
primary treatment of Parkinson's),
but no peer-reviewed scientific
study has established that.

Bottom line: stay informed and
consider using alternative sugar
substitutes.
