No "tricks"
to providing
snacks to group
of troubled kids.

uring the days and weeks
following Halloween,
leftover candy usually
ends up in the wrong place: in the
mouths of those who eat it because
it's there, or worse yet, according
to one Oak Park couple, in the gar-
bage.
So, for the past 48 years, Lou
and Joy "The Candy Lady" Landau
have gathered literally tons of snack
items from kids who trick or treat
for it and adults who purchase it
but don't distribute it all. Then
they donate it to the children at
W.J. Maxey Boys Training School in
Whitmore Lake.
During a call to the Oakland
County Children's Village, Landau
learned that the kids there almost
never had candy and it would be
most welcome. For several years,
she and her family collected left-
over Halloween treats to take there.
They switched to the Maxey school
about 40 years ago, where the 200
or so young boys who live there do
not trick or treat.
Before delivery, Landau said,
"Every single piece of candy is
checked for safety. And all gum is
removed because they don't take
gum there." But nothing is wasted.
"I take the gum to my cancer doc-
tor who gives it to patients:' she
said.
The Landaus see the project as
something that goes far beyond the
two of them, hoping that children
who give up something they enjoy
to those who don't have it will learn
an important lesson.
Candy donations must be
dropped off at the Landaus' Oak
Park home by Thursday, Nov. 15.
Call (248) 541-6884 for directions.
The couple also will accept new
items, to be delivered to Maxey
School as Christmas gifts. LI
