BANQUET HALL 'AFFORDABLE ELEGANCE" Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg Zoe Zien Mixed Repertory The Miami City Ballet brings both classical and contemporary dance to Detroit Opera House. 28847 FRANKLIN RD. SOUTHFIELD Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News I t's sneakers instead of toe shoes for a group of dancers appearing in the Detroit debut of the Miami City Ballet. The contemporary footwear is found in one of three pieces the company will perform Nov. 2-4 at the Detroit Opera House. Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg is one of the so-called "stompers" as she showcases Twyla Tharp's choreogra- phy in In the Upper Room, set to the music of Phillip Glass. The program also uses more conventional dance gear in two ballets by choreographer George Balanchine: Agon, a collabora- tion with Balanchine's friend, com- poser Igor Stravinsky, and Raymonda Variations, set to the music of 19th- century Russian composer Alexander Glouzounov. "In the Upper Room is the most challenging ballet that we've ever done," says Kronenberg, 30ish, who joined the troupe in 1994, after New York training with Teresa Alba and at the School of American Ballet. "There are two sections — the bal- let people and the stompers, who run around for 45 minutes. It's a great, high-energy piece with nonstop aero- bic movement!" Kronenberg, a troupe principal who values the instruction given by famed dancer and company leader Edward Villella, also will be seen in Agon. "The Agon choreography is neo- classical, and it's very much about a contest:' says Kronenberg, who grew up with Jewish traditions from her father's side of the family and is mar- ried to fellow dancer Carlos Guerra. "It starts as a contest of men against men and women against women and then changes." Zoe Zien, who also trained at the School of American Ballet, joined the company in 2003 as an apprentice and was promoted to a member of the corps in 2005. She appears in Raymonda Variations, filled with the lightness of twirling pink tutus. "Balanchine is my all-time favorite choreographer:' says Zien, 23, the daughter of Susan Pilarre, who danced with the New York City Ballet and now teaches at the American Ballet School. "This is a fun piece." Zien, whose father is Jewish stage and screen actor Chip Zien, learned Jewish traditions at home and appre- ciates learning more about dance in daily sessions with Villella. "He has a unique way of explain- ing what he wants from dancers and makes sure we understand in terms of movement and music:' Zien explains. Miami City Ballet, founded by Villella in 1985, features 55 dancers and has 13 world premieres to its credit. The company repertoire offers 97 ballets performed internationally. Both Kronenberg and Zien enjoy dancing just for fun even though their daily work schedule can run 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Kronenberg likes going out with her husband and trying out new salsa steps. Zien divides her fun dance time among many styles and has enjoyed watching the TV show So You Think You Can Dance because she has found the participants "very powerful." "A gym owner in Florida has offered memberships to all the danc- ers in our troupe Kronenberg says. "I've been going a lot and like the hydrotherapy." fl The Miami City Ballet performs 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2- 3, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway, in Detroit. $28-$75.
