FINE CHINESE DINING Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News B illy Brandt built a music career putting others in the spotlight but recently decided to place himself at the center of attention. Brandt, using his skills as a record producer and band performer, has made a CD of his own music and will introduce it during a party Sunday evening, Nov. 4, at Memphis Smoke in Royal Oak. The Mission Band, the title of his lat- est project with his own Drum Dancer Records, includes 12 folk-rock rendi- tions of old and new songs. "I'm planning on a larger-than- usual band for the party, and I think I've reached a point in my life where I can say I'm the real thing:' says the singer-songwriter-guitarist, who regu- larly performs with the Jill Jack Band and Grievous Angel. "I will have both bands with me and augment that with steel guitar and keyboard players. This time, Jill will be in the background with vocals." The title song of the recording has to do with a searching lifestyle and sets the lyrical mood of the CD. "Watertown" explores the world of someone with a nontraditional direc- tion, perhaps in music or poetry. "Hannah" has to do with the mother- child theme. "When I feel a song coming on, it's rarely on a personal level: explains Brandt, a Ferndale resident who is 53 and single. "It's usually about all of us as we head for a promised land. There's a Jewish legacy, but there's also the human legacy." Brandt, who grew up in Oak Park and Farmington Hills, became inter- ested in music at 12, when he heard the Mamas and the Papas singing "California Dreamin'." He gave up hockey and softball for the guitar. After graduating from Harrison High School in Farmington Hills and taking classes at the University of Arizona, Brandt dropped out of college to appear with young bands perform- ing near the university. A move to New York City opened a career in marketing performers, but after five years that was set aside. In 1985, he returned to Michigan to cope with substance abuse. Back to work, Brandt divided his time between appearing with local bands and managing a family scrap- metal business. "With my salary, I started Drum Dancer Records:' recalls Brandt, whose family firm closed in 2000. "I recorded with the groups Red Sea and Spank before Jill Jack found me, and I've pro- moted her group regionally and locally for 10 years." Grievous Angel started three years ago and includes Nolan Mendenhall on bass and vocals and Roscoe White on guitar. Brandt, whose early religious train- ing came at Temple Beth El and the Birmingham Temple, practices yoga and rides a bike to relax. "My only career goal is to keep on playing what I like," he says. "I want to compromise my style as little as pos- sible." II Billy Brandt will perform at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Memphis Smoke,100 S. Main St., in Royal Oak. (248) 543-4300.
