Dr. Robert Frank speaks at the September groundbreaking.

N

1934; our nephew graduated in 2000
and our daughter is in her second year
of med school at Wayne," said Weitz.
"We benefit from the stream of Wayne
State graduating physicians that locate
in Traverse City and other more north-
ern towns.
"To continue that stream, the school
needs to recruit students. This new
facility will improve recruitment for
medical students because it will excel
the already excellent clinical training
students receive
There are 1,070 medical students
and 375 graduate students at the WSU
Medical School, making it the third
largest in the country. With its increase
in enrollment and educational activi-
ties, the demand for increased space
became a priority.

Driving Force
"The primary purpose of the
Commons," says Frank, "is to provide
the students with a first-class facility,
which will include small group areas
for studying and teaching, a renovated
library and new auditorium."
Frank and his wife, Sharon Popp,
donated a gift toward the Marjorie
Peebles-Meyers Atrium. "There will
also be a new and unique simulation
center where physicians and students
can study new techniques and proce-
dures before treating patients as well
as a coffee shop open 24/7," he says.
The Medical Education Commons
will consist of a three-story struc-
ture connected to the Vera Shiffman
Medical Library and a two-story
structure connected to Gordon Scott
Hall. The two structures will be con-

nected to each other by an elevated
pedestrian bridge.
The Medical Education Commons
building will provide six large class-
rooms, a flex-classroom that will
double as an auditorium, conference
rooms, student relaxation and medi-
tation space and the Library Super-
service Center. Both structures will
be located on Canfield Avenue. The
Commons will feature a formal lobby
and a three-story atrium.
Part of the library renovation
includes a gift from Dr. and Mrs.
Robert Jampel to establish the Jampel
Detroit Historical Medical Collection.
"Wayne State Medical School is the
major producer of Michigan physi-
cians and it should have the best of
facilities," says Jampel. "The library
itself will be reduced from three floors
to one floor because so much medi-
cal literature is now available on the
Internet. The library will operate from
the first floor and provide several
group study rooms and small reading
areas.
The second floor of the Shiffman
Library will be converted to a Clinical
Skills Center that will include patient
examination rooms and four-station
patient simulation suites.
It will provide several support areas
related to clinical training activities.
The third floor will feature student
testing and computer laboratories and
the School of Medicine's admissions
and financial aid departments.
The Mazurek Medical Education
Commons is part of the $500 mil-
lion goal for the Wayne First Capital
Campaign. Li
