WHAT: My Gym
WHERE: Farmington Hills
For Benjamin Rosenberg of West
Bloomfield, deciding where to have his
6th birthday party was simple. "All he
wanted was a party at My Gym," says
his mom, Karen.
At My Gym Children's Fitness Center
in Farmington Hills, classes and parties
blend social time, self-esteem building
and fulfilling a child's need to keep on
moving — safely — explains Christina
Hamm, who owns the facility with her
financier husband, David. The couple
purchased Michigan's only My Gym
franchise in the fall of 2005, joining
some 200 facilities worldwide.
In 1983, My Gym was a two-location
business, founded by William Caplin and
Yakov and Susi Sherman in California.
By 1989, they had expanded to five facili-
ties and were joined by Cory Bertisch and
Monique Vranesh; together they created
a standardized formula for programming
using equipment designed and manufac-
tured exclusively for My Gym.
"I was looking to start my own gym-
nastics-dance studio when I found the
My Gym program," says Hamm, who
had 24 years of experience in dance,
gymnastics and teaching children. "I
really loved the philosophy."
About 200 kids, aged 6 weeks to 13
years, are currently enrolled in weekly
hour-long classes at My Gym, with
more attending supervised, unstruc-
tured Free Plays. Among them are
Karen Rosenberg's children, includ-
ing Benjamin, who also had his 4th
birthday party at My Gym. "He took
classes there when he was a toddler
[and the facility was under former
ownership]," Rosenberg says. "This
summer he came with me when my
2-year-old daughter, Maya, was in a
class and said he wanted a My Gym
birthday party again." So in August,
Rosenberg says, "Benjamin had an
`everything' party — a perfect mix of
structured play and free time."
For two hours, Benjamin's guests
had exclusive use of My Gym, playing
sports, "working out" on equipment,
climbing a rock wall and snacking on
refreshments brought in by the birth-
day boy's family; staff was on hand to
set up, serve and clean up. Depending
on the kids' ages, parties may also
include puppet play, games and music
— all based on what is offered in
classes.
"And just like in the classes, the
