(Oct. 18, page 6A) should have stated that Cyrus led the Persian Empire from 560-529 B.C.E. Upon conquest of the Babylonians, Cyrus called upon Jewish exiles in 538 B.C.E. to return to their land and rebuild their Temple, which was demolished by Nebuchadnezzar. • In "NCJW Elects Slate" (Oct. 18, page 29a), the names of Sharon Lipton and Harriet Dunsky were incorrectly spelled. Zipser Another DSO Leader In the fine article about Leonard Slatkin ("DSO's Renowned Music Maker," Oct. 18, page 13A), the writer mentions previous Jewish music directors of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Gary Bertini, a well-respected Israeli conduc- tor, should be added to the list. Bertini's actual title was music adviser but he served as the DSO's chief conductor from 1981 to 1983 (between Antal Dorati and Gunther Herbig). www.encyclooaediajudaica.com © 2007, Thomson Gale There are dozens of benefits that make Fox Run, the full-service Erickson com- munity in Novi, a better way to retire. The first theme relates to the need for Jewish education as the way to sustain the involvement of youth in Jewish belief, activities and dedica- tion. Superfunds designed to create Jewish day schools have been created in Boston and Chicago to provide an alternative to congregational weekend and after-school offerings. Why does no one ask, when all chil- dren are required to study American history and literature through the 12th grade, why a similar requirement does not currently exist in both Jewish day schools and congregational schools? Both the Conservative and Reform branches of Judaism have no texts available that survey these two areas during grades 1-9 (which was the case prior to 1975) since the study of Jewish history and literature has now been relegated to adult education. The second theme is the stressing of a commitment to the State of Israel with reinforcement based on young people visiting Israel, if not during their pre-high school experiences, and definitely through the Birthright activities for those of college-age. What is missing is any activity fol- lowing such visits. One would expect that there would be opportunities for those who have visited Israel to have their interest reinforced and strengthened by available activities following such trips. Even the Zionist Organization of America does not have a youth auxiliary that would provide incentives to Jewish youth to continue to support the State of Israel. Commitment to any cause is the result of having a chance to express individual support by involvement in group activities.
