Special to the Jewish News
T
he news threw Kristin
Roberts for a loop. The 43-
year-old freelance TV-com-
mercial producer in Los Angeles, who
grew up in West Bloomfield, imme-
diately felt compelled to take action
when her good friend, Sheryll Kollin,
46, of Farmington Hills was diagnosed
with breast cancer. Kollin, a wife and
mother of two, is a senior vice presi-
dent of broadcast business affairs for
Doner Advertising in Southfield. She
and her family belong to Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield.
"It was shocking and upsetting:'
Roberts said. "I wanted to do some-
thing but there isn't really anything
you can do except give the person
your love and support."
Roberts had heard about the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day, a
three-day, 60-mile trek to raise money
for breast cancer research and com-
munity outreach; but she'd never done
anything so physically challenging.
When breast cancer hit so close to
home, she decided it was time to lace
up her walking shoes.
"I e-mailed my friends in Michigan
and we quickly put together a four-
person team. We all began fundraising
and training:' Roberts said. "It was
hard to train because the team was
in Metro Detroit and I was in Los
Angeles. I called the girls all the time
to make sure they were walking."
The team's cross-country training
and fundraising efforts paid off Sept.
28-30 as Roberts, along with Anita
Lanning of Novi, Jeanine Miller of
Livonia, and Nancy Ragatz of Grand
Blanc, embarked on the three-day
journey from the Farmington Hills
campus of Oakland Community
College and ending at Henry Ford
Museum in Dearborn. While the team
was small, they made a big impact,
raising $16,753.
"The walk was one of the most
physically challenging things I've
done, but also one of the most amaz-
ing and rewarding," Roberts said.
"What made it incredible was meeting
the people and hearing their stories.
"There were so many survivors
walking and they were inspiring.
Sheryll was so touched and honored
by our determination and effort. To
be able to raise money and show your
loved ones how much you care is a
double bonus." Li
