Dear
Bar , e
recently been
trying to lose
weight, but
there are cer-
tain foods that I don't seem to be

addiction? Thanks, Larry.

Physical dependence is
typically characterized
by physical symptoms of
withdrawal, while psy-
chological dependence is
often evidenced by a recurring,
uncontrolled compulsion. Both
are now characterized (with some
debate) as falling under the term,
"addiction." In practice, they often
both exhibit physical and psycho-
logical components.

nswer: Dear Larry, Ad-
diction is a strong word.
Among other things, it im-
plies dependence, loss of control,
and/or compulsion, and is most
often associated with drug
or alcohol addiction.

Behaviors such as eating when not
hungry, binge eating, and exces-
sive time devoted to thinking/plan-
ning about food can indicate a food
addiction (which may have serious
health consequences). If you're
talking about something other than
simple food cravings, you may
want to seek the advice of a quali-
fied dietitian/nutritionist.
