Rochester

Incumbent councilman David Becker is campaigning on a platform of
keeping the city's smalltown character while seeking economic growth
and affordable taxes. Themes include maintaing a local police force,
improving parks and trails, limiting downtown development, and lower-
ing neighborhood traffic speeds and volumes. Becker, a chemistry pro-
fessor at Oakland Community College and Oakland University, has lived
in Rochester 32 years. He's been on the council 13 years and on the
Rochester Downtown Development Authority 20 years.

Birmingham

Seth Chafetz, a former mayor, is seeking election to the city commis-
sion. He served as a commissioner from 1999 to 2003. He was mayor
from 2002 to 2003. His city service includes stints on the library
board and parks and recreation board. He's a professional competitive
figure skating coach at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills. His
platform includes fair taxes, balanced residential/commercial districts
and improved parks and rec options.
Another city commission candidate, Shelli Weisberg, is legislative
director for the American Civil Liberties Union's Michigan branch. Her
city service includes the design review board and the historic district
commission. Her platform includes diversity in participation, consen-
sus building, citizens' rights, accountable strategic planning and staff
involvement in the professional review process.
