Honorees Ann Newman and Aliza Nivy, both of Bloomfield Hills

Barbara and Harold Berry of Bloomfield Hills and Allan Gelfond of Farmington Hills

Lifelong Zionists

ZOA honors two distinguished supporters of Israel.

A

nn Newman and Aliza Nivy
are successful Bloomfield Hills
businesswomen and philanthro-
pists with deep, unique ties to Israel. Both
women were there in 1948 during Israel's
War of Independence.
Newman, who was raised in an
Orthodox home in Poland, made aliyah
to Israel with her family as a young girl.
She was a member of the underground
freedom fighters and the Israel Defense
Forces.
Nivy was born and raised in Tel Aviv
and also fought
for Israel's inde-
pendence. She
married her late
husband, Solomon
Nivy, a few months
before the war;
the couple moved
to Michigan a
short time later to
pursue advanced
degrees.
"These are two
special, unique
women," said Maya Veprinsky, executive
director of the Southfield-based Zionist
Organization of America Michigan Region.
"Both have contributed generously to
many organizations and causes, especially
those dedicated to Israel. They have never
forgotten their roots."
For their dedication and lifelong com-
mitments to Zionism, Jewish education
and the Jewish community, Newman and
Nivy will receive the aVs highest cita-
tion of merit, the Justice Louis D. Brandeis
Award, at its upcoming Balfour event
