establishments, a shopping trip to
downtown Berkley is generally a quick
affair. That's not to say, though, that
the area should be overlooked. In fact,
a handful of merchants are making a
name for themselves and the neigh-
borhood.
A recent addition to 12 Mile is City
Style (3017 W. 12 Mile, 248-548-2489),
a decidedly upscale spot for women's
and men's shoes, casual apparel and
accessories, including the popular
Made in Detroit brand.
Shop-a-holics make a habit of
spending time browsing the expan-
sive collection of colorful fashion
and home accessories at Catching
Fireflies (3117 W.12 Mile, 248-336-
2030), while musicians of all skill
levels compare prices and selections
at McCourt Music (3063 W. 12 Mile,
248-546-4300) and Berkley Music
Company (3039 W. 12 Mile, 248-543-
3900).
Shopping for food is apparently a
favorite pastime in this neck of the
woods. Elaine's Bagels (2847 Coolidge,
248-546-8411) and Elwin's & Co.
(2971 Coolidge, 248-547-1620) are
known region-wide for their sublime

bagels and scones, respectively, while
those with a sweet tooth will find
themselves in a state of bliss once
inside Sweet Essentials (3233 W. 12
Mile, 248-398-7933), where the public
can catch a glimpse of the candymak-
ers hard at work in a storefront kitchen.
Talk about the ultimate in window-
shopping!
Look up "gourmet fruit market"
or "specialty store" in a dictionary
and you're likely to see a photo of
Westborn Market (27659 Woodward,
248-547-1000), overflowing with a
bounty of produce, flowers, meats, pre-
pared foods and all the ingredients to
turn mealtime into a feast.
Fans of antique shopping can amble
through the well-curated shelves at
Caruso Home Accents (3445 Robina,
248-691-1978) for vintage and new

pieces, and at Twice Around Artifacts
(2966 W. 12 Mile, 248-545-6600).
Experienced knitters or those just
learning how to knit one and purl
two look to have you any wool (3475
Robina, 248-541-9665) for all variety
of knitting and crocheting accoutre-
ments.
Brides-to-be looking for the perfect
wedding day fashion accessories —
everything but the dress" is the store's
"everything
motto — delight in the assortment of
bridal finery at The Wedding Shoppe
(27333 Woodward, 248-541-1988).
Finally, no discussion of shopping in
Berkley is complete without mention
of the legendary Doll Hospital and
Toy Solider Shop (3947 W. 12 Mile,
248-543-3115). A familiar landmark
— in Berkley since 1957 — on the
ever-changing retail landscape, the
Doll Hospital boasts 300 product clas-
sifications, 1,200 brands and more
than 59,000 items. Can't find it here? It
most likely doesn't exist.

ENTERTAINMENT/
HANGOUT
The vibe in Berkley is pretty sedate
when compared to neighboring ZIP
codes. But a couple of spots ensure
hipsters and merrymakers don't pass
the town by on their way to points,
north, south and east.
At The Berkley Front (3087 W.
12 Mile, 248-547-3331) beer is king,
but you'll be hard pressed to find Bud
Light or MGD. Rather, "The Front:' as
it's known, has 53 taps and dozens of
bottled brews from around the world.
A second floor space is home to live
performances by local bands.
Next door, relative newcomer 24
Seconds (3071 W. 12 Mile, 248-336-
0024), named for the shot clock in
basketball, is first and foremost a
sports bar. But even those who don't
know a field goal from a grand slam
will find a warm welcome in the styl-
ish watering hole. There's even a roof
deck in the warmer months for the
ultimate in people watching.

EVENTS
From events large and small celebrat-
ing the Woodward Dream Cruise, to
those more in keeping with the small
town charm of Berkley, residents and
visitors alike can keep themselves busy
throughout the year.
