opefully, by the time 6-week-
old Sloane Leia Berman gets
a little bigger, some of her
relatives will have chosen new names
for themselves.
Little Sloane, daughter of Stacie and
Ryan Berman of West Bloomfield, has
six family members who potentially
could be called "Grandma': and four
named "Grandpa!'
Actually, her five-generation fam-
ily includes three grandmas, three
grandpas, two great-grandmas, one
great-grandpa and a great-great-grand-
mother.
"Right now, I'm 'Grandma Laurie:"
said Stacie's mom, Laurie Winston
of West Bloomfield. "My mom (Ann
Goodman of Bloomfield Hills) is
already `Bubbie' because my brother's
son has a 2-year-old. Because my
brother is called Papa, my dad (Leonard
Goodman) is called 'Big Papa!"
Laurie said her husband, Dr. Peter
Winston, a radiologist, "jokingly sug-
gested he might want to be called "Papa
Doc" to try and distinguish himself from
all of the other papas in the family.
To further complicate the name issue,
Ryan's mom, Kathy Dreifus, is Grandma
Bunny!'
"The rest have yet to be determined':
Laurie Winston said.
Not only is Sloane the first child for
Stacie and Ryan, she is the first grand-
child for the Winstons, Kathy and Jay
Dreifus of West Bloomfield and Robin
and Ron Berman of Jupiter Island, Fla.
Sloane also made Bernice Berman of
West Bloomfield a first-time great-

grandma.
"After Sloane was born (on Sept. 3),
we were all at the hospital, including
Ryan's father who flew in from Florida':
Laurie Winston said. Sloane's 96-year-
old great-great-grandma, Esther Kaplan
of Southfield, also was there to meet her
fourth great-great-grandchild. "It was
pretty incredible that Esther was able
to visit us in the hospital': Stacie said.
Kaplan's other great-great-grandchil-
dren live in England, so Sloane is the
first one to be nearby.
"It is obvious that Esther was very
excited to have another great-great-
grandchild': Stacie said. "In the hospital
when Esther came to visit us, she kept
commenting on how she couldn't
believe that everyone in the room — all
five generations — started with her."
Stacie added, "Esther is actually an
amazing poet. She is a very strong,
graceful woman and I would love it if
Sloane were able to take some of these
qualities from her!'
Esther's hope is "to stick around a
while to see her get bigger:'
Sloane's family ties go beyond her
living relatives. "Sloane is named in
memory of a very special lady, my
husband's maternal grandmother, Stella
Klein (Grandma Bunny's mother), who
passed away last November': Stacie
Berman said.
"When I found out I was pregnant, we
thought about how neat it was that our
child would be the fifth generation of
our family. Both my husband and I grew
up with large families who were very
close and it is wonderful to have that for
Sloane as well. Each and every one of her
grandparents has amazing qualities and
things to teach Sloane." I
