SOUTHFIELD FROM PAGE 8C

Northwestern Highway around 12
Mile can satisfy any taste and budget,
from omelets to Osso Buco, and from
white-paper-bag carryout, to white-
tablecloth dining.
Fluffy omelets and other break-
fast favorites are expertly prepared,
and served all day, at the popular
Sunrise Café (28505 Northwestern
Hwy, 248-354-2501), while the deli-
ciously authentic and elegant Il Posto
Ristorante (29110 Franklin, 248-827-
8070), and perfectly appointed Bacco
(29410 Northwestern Hwy, 248-356-
6600) seduce natty diners with their
incomparable Italian fare, superb
wines and top-notch service.
Equally impressive in terms of food
and service is the dimly lit, clubby
Morton's, the Steakhouse (1 Town
Square, 248-6006) for huge portions of
perfectly aged beef prepared with pre-
cision. Indeed, dining here is an event.

Complete kitchen and bathroom remodeling as well as furniture
design and installations including granite, wood and other materials.

TOTAL BILL

When the occasion calls for some-
thing a little more upbeat, nothing
beats the jazzy Fishbone's Rhythm
Kitchen Café (29244 Northwestern
Hwy., 248-351-2925) where the scene
and cuisine get a jolt of real Mardi
Gras flavor. And nothing beats neigh-
boring Beans and Cornbread (29508
Northwestern, 248-208-1680) for
down-home Southern cookin'.
Finally, the foods of the Far East
are finding a home among the strip
malls and office buildings that cover
the landscape here. Long-time
favorite Musashi (2000 Town Center,
248-358-1911) has been joined by
Issa Japanese Restaurant (29555
Northwestern Hwy, 248-355-1881),
which specializes in char-grilled
meats, or kushi/yakiori, and sushi;
and Ruchi (29555 Northwestern Hwy.,
248-352-3200), where the colorfully
spiced and richly flavorful foods of
India find a hungry crowd at lunch
and dinner.

Excluding tax, tip, beverages and banquet parties. Exp. 11/30/07

SHOPPING
Shopping for kosher foods and all
manner of Judaica begins and ends

here in the shadow of 1-696. It's
where, among others, you'll find
One Stop Kosher Market (25155
Greenfield, 248-569-5000) and spe-
cialty shops like Strictly Kosher Meat
Market (26020 Greenfield, 248-967-
4222), Borenstein's Book and Music
Store (25242 Greenfield, 248 967-
3920) and Spitzer's Hebrew Book
and Gift Center (21790 W. 11 Mile,
248-356-6080) for books, music and
gifts, each store carrying on a multi-
generation trade.
Also having a long run, in the retail
lifecycle anyway, is a branch of the
iconic Henry the Hatter (15616 W.
10 Mile, 248-557-7770), where well-
dressed gents of all ages, and more
than a few turned-out gals, return
time and again for hats, caps and
most any type of chapeaux imagin-
able.
The area is also home to a retail
anomaly— the independent book-
store in the form of Book Beat (26010
Greenfield, 248-968-1190). Hardly
the kind of place to run in quickly for
something to read on the plane, Book
Beat can be at times both daunting
(watch your step!) and other-worldly
(my how the time flies when buried
deep in a good book). To say Book
Beat is a treasure hunt is putting it
mildly.
A short drive north of Book Beat,
just south of 11 Mile, set back from a
fast food joint is a retailing curiosity,
at least in these parts, where big sav-
ings are guaranteed every day. It's not
a warehouse club along the lines of a
Costco. And it certainly is not a mass
merchant in the vein of a Target or
Wal-Mart. Nor is it a discounter like
Tuesday Morning or Marshall's.
Rather, it's a German import known
as Aldi (26300 Greenfield, and www.
aldifoods.com for hours and other
locations). Other stores in the area
worth a look include Z Coil (29775
Northwestern Hwy, 248-350-3815),
where specially engineered walking
and hiking shoes are expertly fitted to
ensure maximum comfort and aid in
the reduction of foot pain, and Total
Runner (29207 Northwestern Hwy.,
248-354-1177), for running accouter-
ment fit for marathoners and begin-
ners alike.
On the high-end of the retail spec-
trum, Darakjian Jewelers (29333
Northwestern Hwy., 248-356-7140)
and MB Jewelry Design (29847
Northwestern Hwy, 248-356-7007)
are sure to please.
