Calendar Girls On A Mission

Avid runner Amy Haenick, 32, of Huntington
Woods has completed two Detroit Free Press mar-
athons. On Oct. 21, she'll run the Free Press half
marathon — in honor of her mother, Sue West,
also of Huntington Woods. For years, Sue has been
one of Amy's biggest supporters, often holding a
sign at the finish line and cheering her on.
This year, Sue has been sidelined by emergency
open-heart surgery in June to clear a 95 percent

recovery at home with help from husband Mike.
As a surprise to her mom, Amy has been raising money from friends and family in
her honor for the American Heart Association. So far, she's got more than $2,700. If you're

Michigan State University senior Rachel Pikstein of
West Bloomfield saw one of those scantily clad cam-
pus calendars last year and thought she could do bet-
ter — not only more tasteful, but with a purpose.
A communications major and a former model,
Pikstein, 21, enlisted five friends and found 10 other
MSU beauties via word-of-mouth and a Web site to
create the 2008 College Girls
Calendar. Once Pikstein clears
the $6,000 publication cost,
which was put up by her
parents and her boyfriend, all
profits from the calendar will
be donated to a patient fund
at William Beaumont Hospital
in Royal Oak.
The calendar made

women, wearing matching
"Calendar Girls" tank tops and shorts, sold $700 worth
of $15 calendars at pre-game tailgate parties. The
calendar also will be sold at other campus events and
online at GOMSUC.com.
Pikstein hopes to sell all 2,500 calendars by
February and raise $20,000-$30,000 for Beaumont
patients. Then she wants to go into animal conserva-
tion work. "I would love to become a doctor of herpe-
tology," she said. "I love reptiles." As long as they are
not showing too much skin?
