An Award-Winning Book
Southeast Michigan is a community of communities; not so much a melting
pot as a wonderful, lush stew of varied ingredients and spices that make a
delicious whole. Our neighborhoods are similar: All are places to live, work
and shop, but each is unique in its offerings and ambiance.
For that last three years, freelance writer Ed Nakfoor has taken us on a
tour of these neighborhoods via their main streets, using his unique writing
style to allow us to explore the well-known and the obscure, the latest and
the off-the-beaten-path. A retail consultant in Birmingham, Nakfoor takes
our readers this year on a sidewalk tour of the Detroit area's most popular,
most up-and-coming, sometimes newest and sometimes most venerable res-
taurants, shops and events.
The work of Nakfoor, Jewish News Sr. Graphic Designer Lindsay Schwartz,
staff photographer Angie Baan and yours truly on MainStreets was recog-
nized just last month by the Michigan Press Association.
Its Better Newspaper Contest, judged by the Wisconsin
Press Association to ensure impartiality, honored the
2006 MainStreets with a first-place award for best life-
styles section in its circulation category.
Enjoy MainStreets!
