Volunteers Honored

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit will honor two longstanding
community leaders, Dr. Sheldon Stern
of Franklin and
Jeffrey Davidson
of Birmingham,
by recognizing
them as Federation
nominees for the
2007 Distinguished
Volunteers by
Sheldon

of Fundraising
Professionals' (AFP) on its National
Philanthropy Day, Thursday, Nov. 15, at
the Dearborn Inn.
An optholmologist and volunteer in
the community Stern is a member of
Federation's Quarter Century Club and
has been a consistent donor and activ-
ist for more than 25 years. A member
of the Federation's
Board of Governors,
he has served as a co-
chair of the Special
Gifts Division and
co-chair the Super
Sunday solicitation
effort.

given his time to the Jewish Federation
since moving from Cincinnati in 1999.
He is a member of Federation's Board of
Governors, where he has served as chair
of Federation's Professional Advisory
Committee and is immediate past chair
of Federation's Finance Committee. He
serves on the United Jewish Foundation
board as treasurer.

NCJW Elects Slate

The National Council of Jewish Women
Greater Detroit Section, recently
installed officers for the 2007-2008 year.
Sharon Upton was elected to
serve for her second term as presi-
dent. Elected as vice presidents were:
Cathy Cantor, Irma Glaser, Marlene
Goodman, Susan Marwil and Libby
Sherbin. Corresponding secretary is
Ethel Rosenblatt; recording secretary
is Fern Ettinger; assistant recording
secretary is Joyce Blum; treasurer is
Paula Wolfe.
Elected to the board of directors for
their first term, first-year board posi-
tions were: Carol Freedman, Judi
Freund, Liz Leshman, Sandi Matz,
Sue Simon and Beverly Stone. Sissi
Lapides, Deane Safir and Elaine Tell
were elected to serve as second term,
first-year board members. Shayna
Silverman was elected to fill a first-

term, second-year board position and
Fran Stern was elected to fill a second-
term, second-year board position.
Harriet Dursky and Rose Lynn
Schlussel were elected to serve on the
2007-2008 nominating committee from
general membership.

Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE)
for All Seasons will host Malcolm
Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of
the Conference of
Presidents of Major
American Jewish
Organizations, at 8
p.m. Tuesday, Oct.
30, at the Jewish
Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
Hoenlein has
been affiliated with
Malcolm
the conference, the
Hoenlein
coordinating body
on international Jewish concerns for
50 national Jewish organizations, since
1986. He will discuss "America, Israel
and World Jewry: The Miracles and the
Challenges."
Advance tickets are $8 for JCC mem-

Steps To Understanding

The Jewish Gay Network of Michigan
(JGN) in partnership with PFLAG
(Parents, Family, and Friends of
Lesbians and Gays), the Jewish
Community Center and Jewish Family
Service will present a series of programs
titled "A Step Forward in Understanding:
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender,
Questioning."
The first program in the series,
"Putting a Human Face on
Homosexuality,' will take place 7
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
The program will consist of a panel
discussion by GLBTQ individuals and
family members followed by a question-
and-answer session moderated by Ellen
Yashinsky Chute of JFS.
