p

eople can join together
to find our common-
alities and focus on the
survival of the human species or
become polarized, following fears
to increased hatred and potential
annihilation. The opportunity to
engage humanity and "choose life"
is the critical challenge facing all
people, according to Jewish pre-
senters in the upcoming confer-
ence,"Engaging the Other: The
Power of Compassion," to be held
at the Dearborn Inn Marriot Hotel,
Oct. 25-28.
"As Jews we believe that all
peoples, not only Jews, contain the
spark of the divine — to make
connections with people who are
also interested in healing the world
and safeguarding our planet for the
sake of our children is a mitzvah,
a sacred obligation," said Rabbi
Tirzah Firestone, spiritual leader
of Congregation Nevei Kodesh in
Boulder, Colo. She will be one of the
Jewish speakers at "Engaging the
Other."
Also speaking in Rabbi Brian
Walt of Rabbis for Human Rights.
"Engaging the other is of
extreme importance to the Jewish
community, as I see it;' said
Firestone. "I used to take refuge
in stereotypical thinking. Now I
see that it is far more construc-
tive to reach out and build bridges
with other moderates. I have been
delighted to meet Muslims who
want to hear my part of the truth,
and to share theirs with me. This
is a critical time. Moderates of all
camps need to find one another
and work together."
Locally, Jews and others struggle
with conflict abroad and the task
of living as neighbors at home.
According to Brenda Rosenberg,
founder of the Pathways to Peace
Foundation and member of the
Interfaith Partners in Metropolitan
Detroit, "We have to have a new lan-
guage of speaking with each other.
Non-violent communication can
create the climate to effect change
