MSU's Israel Fest offers the tastes,
sounds, glitter of Jewish homeland.

n an effort to bring a bit of Israel
to town, a group of Michigan
State University students are
actually bringing a bit of Israel to
East Lansing.
The 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, Israel
Fest 2007 will feature Israeli food,
music and an Israeli shuk (market-
place).
Even the MSU Hillel staff person
working on the program is from
Israel. He is Yuval Ben-Hai of Petach
Tikva, the group's Israel Fellow.
The third annual Israel Fest event
is chaired by MSU students, Daniel
Kuhn, 20, Robyn Berkowitz, 21,
and Aaron Levine, 20, all of West
Bloomfield.

No Charge To Students

Looking to attract as a large a
group as possible, many of the
event's amenities will be offered at
no charge, with costs underwritten
by the school's Jewish Student Union,
University Activities Board, ASMSU
student government and the MSU
Hillel.
"It was important to us to make
the [Israeli] food, beverages and
other parts of this event free of
charge, including the make-your-own
Hebrew necklace activity and the
concert featuring Israeli pop sensa-
tion Harel Skaat," Kuhn said.
"This is our third Israel Fest. We
have always hosted it as an event free
to the public." In addition to under-

standing that college students are on
a budget, he said, "We want to share
our culture with the rest of campus
without expecting anything."
Among the products that will be
sold at the shuk are T-shirts and
sweatshirts with logos of Israeli
army units and Israeli-made jewelry,
designed by Michal Negrin. The items
were ordered at reduced prices direct-
ly from Israeli stores and shipped to
MSU Hillel for the event. They will be
sold for the purchase cost "to provide
Israeli products to people at a cheap
price Kuhn said.
"Over the past few years, Michigan
State and the Jewish student com-
munity have worked very hard to
make themselves heard on campus
amongst Jews and non-Jews. Events
like this allow Jewish students to
show their Israeli pride and to feel at
home in such an environment.
"Since our target is far beyond
merely Jewish students, we want to
express ourselves and offer people
who have never been to Israel and
don't know anything about it some-
thing to enjoy, taste and relate to:'
Kuhn said. I I
