Conservation Tips
What you can do to stop global warming:
1.Consider replacing single-pane windows with double pane.
Double-glazing generally cuts heat loss by 50 percent. Triple
glazing saves even more.
2. Keep storm windows and doors in place during the sum-
mer if you use air conditioning. Just as they prevent heat
loss, they also prevent heat gain.
3. Replace leaky windows.
4. Consider sealing off north-facing windows entirely in cold
weather months.
5. Weather-strip windows and doors conscientiously. Use
caulk to seal cracks and holes.
6. Have an energy audit done for your home and/or business.
Jewish Thought on the Environment
Tikkun olam: The perfection/fixing of the world is in our
hands.
There is a midrash (rabbinic biblical commentary) that
Jewish environmentalists are fond of quoting:
"When God created the first human beings, God led them
around the Garden of Eden and said: "Look at My works! See
how beautiful they are – how excellent! For your sake I cre-
ated them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My
world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it."
(Midrash Kohelet Rabbah, 1 on Ecclesiastes 7:13)

Fieger Decries Erosion Of Rights
The First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution
have been blatantly disregarded by corporate America and by the
administration of President George W. Bush, Southfield attorney
Geoffrey Fieger told more than 300 people at the Birmingham
Temple in Farmington Hills on Sept. 24.
Fieger's talk was the opening event of the 2007-08 Birmingham
Temple Forum series.
"The only freedom of
speech that has any effect
on the American people
is owned by the corpora-
tions," he said. He claimed
that six corporations own
all the television stations
and 80 percent of the
radio news organizations.
"We've got John
Geoffrey Feiger is flanked by Peter
Stewart, Bill Maher,
Molnar, temple president, and Paul
[Keith] Olbermann. They Kadish, Temple Forum organizer,
say insightful things
both of Farmington Hills.
about things that are
going on in the country,
but — and I'm not denigrating them — they are comedians,"
Fieger said. "In another era, they would have been court jesters."
Fieger said the so-called Patriot Act has trampled both the
Fourth Amendment, against unreasonable searches and seizures,
and the Fifth Amendment guarantee of due process of the law.
Quoting Benjamin Franklin, Fieger said, "Those who would trade
security for freedom deserve neither?'
Fieger, whose father was Jewish and mother of Norwegian heri-
tage, also spoke of his recent indictment on charges of conspiring
to make more than $125,000 in illegal contributions to the 2004
presidential campaign of Democrat John Edwards. He referred to a
recent article in Harpers magazine that alleged his indictment was
part of a "scheme hatched soon after Bush took office" to "fly-speck"
the financial records of those identified as likely major contribu-
tors to the campaigns of Edwards and Hillary Clinton, pinpointing
inconsistencies that would have otherwise been considered minor
paperwork errors.
"I'll trade you your Fifth Amendment rights for my mug shot," he
joked.
