There's No Defense
In his feeble attempt to justify his
invitation to Iranian leader Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia
University, Columbia President Lee
Bollinger declares, "We have a deep and
almost single-minded commitment
to pursue the truth" ("Repelling The
Revulsion You Stand For',' Oct. 4, page 29).
Bollinger wants us to believe that
providing a forum to Ahmadinejad to
spew his despicable, irrelevant and anti-
Semitic agenda speaks to that end.
All agree that the pursuit of truth
is a noble goal. However, does anyone
other than Bollinger honestly believe
that Ahmadinejad's hate-filled rhetoric
addresses the truth? Would Bollinger
have invited Adolf Hitler to speak at
Columbia in pursuit of the "truth"?
Selling out democracy in the name of
free speech is indefensible.

A Charlatan's Sins

Not every sin and misdeed is subject to

God's consideration for atonement. Even
the youngest students at Hebrew school
will point out that God does not, for
example, forgive one's sins towards his/
her fellow; one must first make amends
with the injured party and only then
may he/she seek Divine forgiveness.
Less well known, perhaps, is the cat-
egory of sin referred to as "I shall sin and
later repent." Lest one make the mistake
of considering forgiveness an entitle-
ment, the law warns that an individual
may not hold God hostage to His own
good will. God will not forgive those
who sin and expect that a few hastily
muttered prayers and some perfunctory
breast beating will get them off the hook.
Similarly, when reciting the Tefillah
Zakkah (Pure Prayer) on Yom Kippur
eve, wherein each individual grants
blanket forgiveness to all who may have
offended him/her over the past year, one
exempts from forgiveness "those who
have sinned against me, assuming that I
will forgive them." Clearly, the pre-

sumption of good will holds only when
this good will is mutually present.
Thus, it pains me, as one who embrac-
es her proud dual heritage, both as Jew
and American, to see my countrymen
extend the precious gift of freedom of
speech to those who would deny it to
their own, to those who openly mock
the American system of justice and the
sound Judeo-Christian values at its heart.
I cannot help but feel that the framers
of our great constitution turn over in
their graves when such tyrants as Iranian
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are
given a forum to spout lies and rational-
izations in one of our finest institutions
of higher learning, when this same tyrant
— who propagates terrorism and war
— is permitted to address an august
body, supposedly dedicated to world
peace, so he may clothe his venom in
rhetoric further polluting the waters of
peace ("Repelling The Revulsion You
Stand For',' Oct. 4, page 29).
For all that I have faith in my fellow
countryman and am certain that they
will see through this charlatan, I am
offended that he should be permitted
to manipulate our honorable system of
government and a way of life the thought
of whose very destruction lies at the core
of what some would call his heart.

Valued Allies
With the tendency of the liberal Jewish
community to stereotype Christians who
support Israel as having sinister ulterior
motives, it was important to interview
some of these Christians ("Christian
And Zionist',' Sept. 27, page 20).
Rather than being forced to endure
caricatures, we were introduced to real
people who support Israel because they
believe it's the right thing to do.
Instead of constantly questioning their
motives in search of thought crimes, we
need to value them as allies. They're on
our side.

RENO 'Oa Don't Know

In recent remembrances of the Six-Day War, it was noted
that the Israeli assault on Jerusalem was only the second
successful attempt in history from the east. Who executed
the first successful attempt from that vantage point?
