REAK

October 11 . 2007

A

t the Pierson Lake picnic site, near the Arctic Circle at the back of the
Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, visitors saw an unusual sight. And it wasn't
in the form of an animal, but rather in the shape of a square.
The sighting was actually a sukkah, transported and constructed by members
of Young Israel of Oak Park. They used it for a picnic lunch and family gathering.
The Sept. 30 event, sponsored by Ezrat Nashim, the synagogue's sisterhood
organization and organized by Margery Klausner of Southfield, attracted about
60 people, including 30 children, who took turns feeding some of zoo's taller
inhabitants — a few very friendly, hungry giraffes. 17
