Along with the three full-time
employees — Ron, Rod and Diane —
the store's three part-time employees
include Ron's father, Phil Elkus, 81. A
31-year manufacturer's representative
for Levi's, Phil helped Ron create the
store in 1982 and "every customer asks
about him," says Diane.
The communal focus of the store
and its owners has been evident for
many years. Ron Elkus is a board
member of JARC, the Farmington Hills
agency that serves persons with dis-
abilities, and Brown is on the board of
the Myasthenia Gravis Association.
The Shirt Box has held charity
events for a number of organiza-
tions, including MSU Hillel's Dress
for Success program, the B'nai B'rith
Youth Organziation fashion show, a
charity shirt auction for Kids Kicking
Cancer, and events for Hurricane
Katrina victims and the Janice
Charach Epstein Gallery at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit.

The 25th anniversary year began
with two other celebrations: Phil Elkus
was an 8 Over 80 Award recipient of
Jewish Apartments & Services and
Rod Brown's parents, Helen and Fred
Brown, were honored by the American
Red Magen David for Israel. ID
