Joshua Nelson and the Kosher Gospel Singers performed Hebrew and Jewish spiritual music with soul that rocked the Max Music Center and the hand-clapping and foot tapping audience. This evening was quite a happening, and it was hard to sit still in the seats!! I want to extend a very special thank you to our benefit honorees, Naomi and Lionel Margolick for being such generous Kadima supporters, along with our benefit chairmen, Bill Berman, Michael Maddin, Steve Miller, Eugene Applebaum, Diane and Emery Klein, Sandi Tamaroff and our parlor hosts, Joy and Allan Nachman. Our Kadima volunteers and staff who worked so hard on the benefit committee and ticket sales also deserve a warm thank you. Kadima has recently expanded its mission to serve families dealing with sons and daughters younger than age 18, who are struggling with mental illness. The Kadima Youth Initiative has also empowered the Educational Conference Committee to put together a day of learn- ing and exploration at Oakland University on November 16th entitled "When Mental Illness First Appears: Advocating For Our Youth At Risk." Joshua Nelson (center) with Benefit Honorees Lionel Margolick & Naomi Margolick On September 25th, more than 1,500 Kadima supporters were treated to a concert by Joshua Nelson, his Kosher Gospel Singers and his backup musicians. For 90 minutes he sang, joked about his reli- gious upbringing and paid homage to Kadima. The audience danced and clapped to his unique Jewish Gospel music. Prior to Nelson's performance, the first Kadima Tzedakah Award was presented to Naomi and Lionel Margolick by Event Chairman, Mandell (Bill) Berman in recognition of the Margolick's long-time com- mitment to Kadima. Thanks to the generosity of so many Kadima donors, this was the most successful event in Kadima's 23 year history. KADIMA announces the purchase of the Ann and Norman Katz Home for four individuals located in West Bloomfield. THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY of the children and grandchildren of Sarah Pitt, KADIMA received its 21st home located in Farmington. The dedication of both homes will take place in the late fall. KADIMA LAUNCHES NEW FAMILY GROUP Kadima is conducting a monthly advocacy/support group for parents of children with behavioral issues related to ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Eating Disorders. Meetings are held at 15999 W. 12 Mile Road, Southfield. Parents learn coping skills, advocacy and knowledge about community resources. The program is funded by the Jewish Fund and there is no fee for this service. For information call Lisa Kaufman, 248-559-8235, ext. 104. TIME IS RUNNING OUT When you reach the age of 70 1/2, the government insists that you begin withdrawing money from your IRAs. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows individuals age 70 1/2 and older to donate some of this money directly from their traditional IRA through their financial institution to a charity such as KADIMA without paying taxes on this gift.
