FEDERATION'S

JN retains title of Michigan
Newspaper of the Year.

F

or the fourth time in six
years, the Michigan Press
Association has named the
Detroit Jewish News "Newspaper of the
Year." The JN finished first in five judg-
ing categories to outpace at least 30
other weekly newspapers in its circula-
tion class from across the state.
The JN's winning entries were:
• News Story (47 entries total)
— Coverage of Federation's 2006 Teen
Mission to Israel. The Israel-Hezbollah
war cut short the JN and Michigan
Board of Rabbis-cosponsored mission.
"Excellent use of resources and con-
tacts to keep an eye on a distant, dif-
ficult situation," said the judges. Story
Development Editor Keri Guten Cohen
and Senior Graphic Designer Lindsay
Schwartz led the staff-driven coverage.
• Editorial Writing (14 entries
total) — Editor Robert Sklar was
honored for editorials on interfaith
relations in Metro Detroit, creche
displays on public property during
the Christmas season and the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency's investigation of
General Motors activities in Hitler's
Germany. "First-rate work to serve
the Jewish community. Keep it up!"
declared the judges. Senior Copy
Editor David Sachs contributed to the
General Motors editorial.
