Genetic Testing Checklist One in 40 (2.5 percent) persons of Ashkenazi Jewish descent carries one of three common mutations that may result in an increased risk for breast and/or ovarian cancer. If there is a history of any of the following conditions, you may be a candidate for genetic testing: • Personal history of breast can- cer before age 50 • Personal history of ovarian can- cer at any age • Personal history of both breast and ovarian cancer • Bilateral breast cancer • Male breast cancer • Family history of breast and ovarian cancer • Family history of two or more with breast cancer younger than 50. Knowing your risk leads to preven- tion and early detection of cancer. • Henry Ford Health System Josephine Ford Cancer Center Mary Helen Quigg, M.D. 6777 W. At this point "Rachel;' a 40-some- thing Ann Arbor wife, mother and social worker who last year was diag- nosed with ovarian cancer, has chosen increased surveillance plus significant lifestyle changes. She doesn't rule out adding a preventive drug or future sur- gery. Rachel, who asked that her name be changed to protect her privacy, has a family history of breast cancer. Doctors discouraged her from genetic testing, she said. "I was extremely vigilant',' getting a baseline mammogram at age 30 and having regular mammograms and examinations. She was never told how closely breast and ovarian cancers are related, she said. After her diagnosis, any barriers to the gene test were gone. Results showed she had the BRCA1 gene. "I think the whole thing is a hot potato',' she said of advertising the test to the general public. "Personally, I wish I had known more about that option (genetic testing)" before my cancer developed.
