PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGIE BAAN The South Tower atrium of Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak was transformed into an educational wonderland for families during "Beaumont's Backyard EdVenture" — a fun, medical-themed learning experience for parents and children held Sept. 9 that raised $75,000 for the Ghesquiere Family Center for Children's Surgery, Beaumont's newest ROBIN SCHWARTZ, pediatric facility. COLUMNIST About 400 participants took part in interactive activities, including making fake blood and performing a mock tonsillectomy, as well as scaling a climbing wall, exploring a miniature house and enjoying food and entertainment provided by the Saline fiddlers. "As the name implies, this event was all about fun, family and learning," said Margaret Casey, president of The Beaumont Foundation. The 16,000-square-foot Ghesquiere Center in Royal Oak features a "river" floor, twinkling stars on the ceiling, red wagons to transport patients and other kid-friendly images designed to reduce anxiety for children who have to undergo surgical procedures. ❑ Above left: Event co-chairs Leslie Lewiston Etterbeek of Bloomfield Hills and Pamela Applebaum of Birmingham.
